Preventive Dentistry

Counseling our patients on diet counseling and good oral hygiene is of the most important services we provide at Desert Foothills Dental. With exams and teeth cleanings at least every six months, you can avoid many dental problems.

What Are the Benefits of Preventive Dentistry?

Nobody wants to spend more time than necessary at the dentist's office, but it's not always about fear or anxiety; maybe you're concerned about the cost and how unexpected dental expenses will fit into your budget.

Investing a little time and effort in regular exams and teeth cleanings can minimize the need for other treatments and save on dental care. It's far better for your oral health to practice prevention than to wait until problems like gum disease and cavities take a long-term toll on your smile.

Recent research has shown that

What's Involved with Dental Prevention?

When you partner with your dental team, minimizing your risk for oral health problems is easy.

Proper Brushing and Flossing at Home

When was the last time someone checked how you are cleaning your teeth? The most common response we hear is "never" or 'I don't remember." You are responsible for your oral health 363 days a year, and what you do during that time is as crucial as any treatment we provide. The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice daily, flossing once, and avoiding processed and excessive carbohydrate (not just sugar) intake in your diet. It is just as important to remember that acidic foods break down tooth structure. A pH of 5.5 or lower can dissolve tooth structure. Check out our blog on diet, pH and the effect on teeth here.

Teeth Cleanings with Our Hygienist or Dentist

To be most effective, pair your at-home oral hygiene efforts with professional teeth cleanings with your hygienist every six months. These visits clear away bacteria-laden plaque and hardened plaque called tartar that you can't effectively remove at home.

Your hygienist and doctor also checks\ for signs of gum disease and recommends treatment and education on improving your oral hygiene as needed.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

Your teeth may feel okay, but that doesn't always mean there isn't a problem developing that you can't yet see or feel. Exams every six months allow our dentist to monitor you to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.

We use intraoral cameras because they are a great educational tool for informing you about your dental needs. During your exam, our dentist moves the small digital camera around your mouth, and you can see the images on the TV monitor.

If needed, we will provide prompt treatment, which is easier than waiting until a problem becomes more complicated to treat.

We Make Dentistry Easy and Convenient

At Desert Foothills Dental, we want to motivate and inspire you to achieve excellent oral health. We do this by providing a friendly and welcoming office environment. We love building relationships with our patients, so they know they can always rely on us for supportive, non-judgmental dental care.

We also offer extended office hours and are open several days a week at 7 AM and stay until 7 PM. These hours are designed to fit your needs, so you can schedule appointments that fit your busy schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental health is related to a number of factors, including: Genetics, Medical Conditions, Medications, Stress, Diet, Oral Hygiene, Tobacco Use.

  1. Genetics: Some people are predisposed to certain dental problems, such as cavities or gum disease, due to their genes.
  2. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk of dental problems and slow down the healing process after dental procedures.
  3. Medications: Some medications can cause dry mouth, which can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease.
  4. Stress: Stress can impact oral health by leading to clenching and grinding of the teeth, which can cause damage to the teeth and jaw.
  5. Diet: The food and drinks you consume can have a significant impact on your dental health. Sugary and acidic foods and drinks can contribute to tooth decay, while crunchy fruits and vegetables can help to clean teeth and freshen breath.
  6. Oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly are essential for maintaining good dental health. This helps to remove plaque and prevent the buildup of bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease.
  7. Tobacco use: Smoking or using tobacco products can stain teeth and increase the risk of oral cancer and gum disease.

Marijuana and CBD products can potentially affect dental health in a few ways:

  1. Dry mouth: Both marijuana and CBD products can cause dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath because saliva helps to wash away food particles and neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
  2. Gum disease: Smoking marijuana has been linked to an increased risk of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and other oral health problems.Staining: Smoking marijuana can also cause tooth discoloration and staining. This is because the smoke can leave a residue on the teeth, which can be difficult to remove with regular brushing.
  3. Decreased healing: If you have dental surgery or an extraction, using marijuana or CBD products can potentially slow down the healing process by reducing blood flow and causing inflammation.
  4. Increased appetite: Some people may experience an increased appetite or cravings for sugary foods after using marijuana, which can contribute to tooth decay.

It's important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the impact of marijuana and CBD products on dental health. If you use these products, talk to us about any concerns and maintain good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing daily.

For the vast majority of dental procedures, we need to take a look at what you need a quote for before stating a dollar amount. For example, with a crown, several factors determine the price including but not limited to:

  1. Does the tooth need a root canal?
  2. Does the tooth need a build-up?
  3. What kind of material needs to be used for the crown?
  4. Does the patient clench or grind their teeth?
  5. Is the tooth supported by healthy teeth and gums?
  6. Does the tooth need custom color matching?

That being said, we CAN quote prices for things such as exams and some basic procedures over the phone.

Energy Drinks Take a Toll on your Teeth, Gut and Heart

Preventive Dentistry Technology

Digital X-Rays & Digital Sensors

Dental x-rays are critical because they show us issues we can’t see with a visual exam alone, such as cavities inside or between teeth. We also use digital x-rays because they minimize radiation exposure by as much as 80 percent compared to traditional x-rays.

Highly-detailed digital x-rays help us diagnose dental issues in their earliest stages and treat them before they progress. Digital x-rays also help us keep you informed about your oral health needs. Because we can zoom in, zoom out, and rotate the images, we can give you the best view, so you can better understand our treatment recommendation.

Our digital x-rays are also comfortable because we capture the images with digital sensors. Instead of a film clip held in the mouth, the flat sensor has rounded edges that won’t poke into your cheeks and make taking an x-ray easy and efficient.

We store your x-rays securely in your digital patient record so any team member can access them easily.
