Dental Crowns and Bridges

If your teeth don't function well because they're worn, broken, or decayed, you can experience discomfort chewing and may have to limit the foods you eat. The same applies if you have missing teeth, in addition to feeling self-conscious about the gap in your smile. For you, we offer dental crowns or bridges to get back your comfortable, confident smile.

Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a restoration we use to strengthen and protect a damaged tooth. Crowns are commonly called "caps" because of the way they completely surround a tooth. A dental crown not only restores the damaged tooth's strength and function but also enhances your smile's appearance.

At Desert Foothills Dental, we offer crowns made of porcelain and zirconia because they are long-lasting and resemble the appearance of tooth enamel.

Some cases where we would recommend a crown are:

  • Strengthen a tooth with a large filling
  • Support a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Restore the visible part of a dental implant
  • Protect a fractured or cracked tooth

If our dentists think a crown is the right solution, they share x-rays and intraoral images to show you the issue and help you understand the benefits of treating it. We welcome your questions because we want you to feel informed and confident about your treatment decision before we proceed.

Getting Your New Dental Crown

Placing a crown usually takes place over two appointments. At the first, we prepare your tooth by removing a small amount of dental enamel to make room for your crown. Next, we use a shade guide to find the right shade of white, so the crown matches your smile perfectly.

We take impressions of the prepared tooth to make a perfect model that our state-of-the-art dental lab uses to customize your crown to our specifications. In the meantime, we place a temporary crown on the tooth while you wait for the lab to finish your new crown.

When your crown is ready in about two weeks, you return to our office, where we check it for quality and proper fit. Our dentist removes the temporary and adjusts the final crown, so it fits comfortably and doesn't interfere with your bite. Finally, your new crown is polished and cemented securely onto the tooth.

Dental Bridges: A Solution for Missing Teeth

We always recommend replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or other prosthetic for several reasons.

The Problem with Missing Teeth

Losing a tooth diminishes your self-confidence because you don't feel good about your smile's appearance. You also lose function because your teeth are intended to work together to perform functions like eating, speaking, and chewing.

In addition to functional issues, surrounding teeth shift and tilt into the missing tooth space. A bridge fills the gap and holds the space to prevent neighboring teeth from shifting out of alignment.

The bridge helps maintain your bite alignment and prevents issues with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Problems with the TMJ cause numerous problems, including face and jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty chewing and opening your mouth.
