Did you know that hypothyroidism can have a significant impact on your dental health and dental treatment? According to studies, individuals with an underactive thyroid gland are more likely to develop gum disease, tooth decay, and dry mouth. These conditions can lead to more complicated dental problems and make dental surgery more challenging. Hypothyroidism may affect bone healing after dental extraction, as it can lead to decreased bone turnover and density, which may impede the normal bone healing process. Studies have shown that individuals with hypothyroidism may experience delayed healing and increased risk of complications after dental surgery, such as infection, dry socket, and poor wound healing.

One study published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery investigated the impact of hypothyroidism on bone healing after dental extractions. The study found that individuals with hypothyroidism had a higher incidence of postoperative complications, including delayed healing, dry socket, and wound infection, compared to individuals without hypothyroidism. The study also suggested that careful management of hypothyroidism and close monitoring of bone healing may be necessary in individuals undergoing dental surgery.

So, it's crucial to maintain good oral hygiene, visit your dentist regularly, and inform them of your hypothyroidism to receive the best dental care possible.
