Oral Health Care Year in Review: Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

Sedation dentistry exists to help minimize the risks associated with dental anxiety and any fears of pain that you may have. If you’re worried about any pain they’re going to feel during a procedure, or are scheduled for a surgical treatment that requires the patient being put into a deep sleep; numerous sedatives exist to help assist you.

For a durable sedative to ensure an individual suffers from no pain or falls asleep, oral sedation, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia can be implemented. Although ingesting a pill for an oral sedation often takes up to an hour, the dosage levels can be adjusted for the chosen level of sedation. Likewise, intravenous sedation works the same way, but the effect is immediate. In addition, with general anesthesia, a person can be placed into a deep sleep from which they will not awake until the anesthesia wears off.

Another common form of sedation is an inhaled sedation which occurs through the inhalation of a gas substance, usually nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is highly effective at soothing a patient and preparing them for any oral health care treatments they may need.
